Bridgman Environmental Issues - Teak Plantations & West African Iroko

Bridgman logo

The teak that Bridgman use in the ‘Club’ and ‘Tecknique’ ranges of garden furniture comes mainly from the island of Java in Indonesia. It is grown in teak plantations and Bridgman is pleased to give their assurance that their teak does not come from tropical rainforests. The teak plantations, from which they purchase their teak, are nearly all owned and controlled by the Indonesian government department, Perum Perhutani.Bridgman Environment Issues

The teak originates from teak plantations that were first established in the Indonesian islands about 150 years ago, by the Dutch. Perum Perhutani now manages most of these teak plantations, applying a policy of strict and careful cultivation, which began in the 19th century and has continued successfully to this present day. Bridgman maintains a policy of promoting good practice with regard to the origins of their timbers.

Bridgman are pleased to offer several fully certified FSC items in their Club range of teak garden furniture, that derive their timber from fully certified FSC forests in the Soloman Islands, Costa Rica and other approved and controlled sources. These sources exclude illegally harvested timber, forests where high conservation values are threatened, where violation of people’s civil and traditional rights take place and wood from forests harvested for the purpose of converting the land to plantations or other non-forest use.

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)

The FSC is an international organisation founded in 1993 to promote good forest management worldwide. Its’ members comprise environmental groups such as WWF and Greenpeace. Bridgman Club and Tecknique garden furniture products that display the FSC label, guarantees that the timber originated from forests that have been inspected and evaluated to comply with an internationally agreed set of strict environmental, social and economic standards.

Iroko

Bridgman Iroko garden furniture is produced from kiln-dried Iroko timber, obtained from West African forests. Bridgman considers the proper and effective use of timber supplies to be of the greatest importance. It is by taking a responsible attitude that Bridgman can join in the effort to encourage these countries and their indigenous people to adopt sensible and realistic regeneration programmes. These policies also help to encourage the continuation of investment strategies, to secure the long-term economic controlled use of their natural resources.
