Gloster Environment - Quality plantation teak garden furniture
Only premium Indonesian plantation teak is used in the manufacture of Gloster garden furniture. Teak trees are not indigenous to Indonesia, but the climatic conditions on Java are ideal for growing this species of tree. Teak was originally introduced to the islands by Buddhist monks about 700 years ago. When the Dutch colonised Indonesia in the 19th Century, they realized the opportunity to establish large teak plantations and introduced the sustainable plantation management systems that are still in use today.
Plantation teak is no different than any other crop, except that the growing cycle is far longer - 60 years or more from planting to harvesting. The trees are continuously cared for by the local population and over their lifetime the trees are regularly pruned and the integrity of the plantations carefully maintained. Plantation teak is a better quality timber due to it being healthier and having a straighter grain with less knots which makes it the ideal timber for Gloster garden furniture.
Gloster work continually with the managers of the Indonesian, government owned plantations and other interested parties, to ensure that everything to do with their use of Teak is environmentally correct. Gloster also take great care to ensure that all their manufacturing activities follow good environmental practices for the good of their own employees and the people of the local Indonesian communities.
