From the unpacking of furniture to the end of a piece of furniture's life – recycling to help our environment is always at the forefront of our minds.  We take recycling seriously at Shackletons and ensure that everything that can be recycled is recycled!

Knowing that your are purchasing good quality furniture either in Wood, Rattan or Metal, that looks great, lasts for years, is very comfortable, and gets recycled at the end of its life is one of the many benefits when buying from Shackletons, but knowing that all the packaging is also reycled makes buying from Shackletons a great environmental choice as well.

The three steps of recylcing create a continuous loop

Step 1 – Collection and Processing

Step 2 – Manufacturing

Step 3 – Purchasing New Products made from Recycled Materials which has many benefits :-

Recycling cardboard helps reduce pollution, and recycling one ton of cardboard saves over 9 cubic yards of landfill space!

Cardboard is manufactured from cellulose fibers extracted primarily from trees. Using a recycled material, rather than a raw material conserves energy and natural resources and helps reduce pollution. Making the pulp used in cardboard creates sulfur dioxide, a gas that causes acid rain. Recycling cardboard cuts that pollution in half.

Paper fibers from corrugated boxes are long and strong. They can be used many times reducing the need to cut down trees. Preserving forests benefits our rivers and lakes by preventing erosion, improves the air we breathe by removing carbon dioxide, adds to the beauty of our surroundings and can save the homes of many different types of wildlife.

All types of Plastics can be recycled.  By recycling plastic it provides a sustainable source of raw materials to industry, greatly reduces the environmental impact of plastic-rich products, minimises the amount of plastic being sent to the UK’s diminishing landfill sites, avoids the consumption of the Earth’s oil stocks, consumes less energy than producing new virgin polymers, and helps sustain the environment for future generations.

We do live in a time during which recycling is the buzzword, but the message about recycling Polystyrene products appears to be lagging behind. The move to more eco-friendly habits is gaining momentum at a rapid rate, but sadly, many do not realise that items made from this material can and should be reprocessed.

Whilst being extremely light in weight, these trays and containers take up a relatively large amount of space as a result of their volume, and the material is not biodegradable, even after burial from long periods. During the recycling process, containers are reduced in volume by about 95%.

Polystrene Recycling Sign

Expanded polystyrene, known as EPS, has part of its origin in petroleum. Thus recycling this material reduces our carbon footprint on the planet, and places far less pressure in resources which are becoming scarce.

Polystyrene is so versatile and has so many wide and beneficial uses, that recovering the material and re-using it almost seems as though it can have a circle of life of its own ultimately reducing pollution and litter, save energy and landfill space, whilst creating new well-paying jobs in the recycling and manufacturing industries.

To sustain our Environment in the future needs all of us to play a part in the recycling process;
