If you’re a bird lover, then why not make a date with the ‘feathered’ kind on Valentines Day?

It’s pure coincidence, but Friday 14 February marks the start of National Nest Box Week (NNBW) www.bto.org/nnbw/index.htm.  And, as with the sentiment of St Valentines, it’s a time we can remind ourselves how fond we are of our feathered garden friends by showing them we care.

The NNBW want to encourage everyone during this week long period to put up nesting boxes in their garden or surrounding local areas, to help promote and enhance biodiversity and conservation of our breeding birds and wildlife population.  This initiative by NNBW is held during the same time every year and was established since 1997, due to the declining natural habits.

Go on, give a bird a home; they’re guaranteed to give lots of listening pleasure especially once the new chicks arrive.  Food can be quite sparse at this time of year too, so nuts, seeds and fat balls would be very much appreciated and ensure they come back year after year.

If you don’t feel inclined to have a go at making a nesting box yourself, then you’ll be able to buy a good quality one from us in-store at Shackletons Home & Garden, which will last for years and years with the minimum of maintenance.  However, if you do fancy a little bit of bird box DIY, then you’ll find plenty of helpful information on the NNBW website www.bto.org/nnbw/make.htm
